Историческая справка

CAVARII (Area of Avignon and Orange)

(1st century BC)

The coinage of the Cavares was previously attributed to the Allobroges (La Tour). Minting would not begin until the fall of the Arverne Empire in 121 BC. From 118 BC, the Cavares found themselves integrated into the new province of Narbonnaise. They were faithful allies of the Romans during the invasion of Cimbri and of the Teutons who were finally arrested by Marius at Verceil and Aix in 102 and 101 BC. Coinage ceased at the end of the Gallic Wars. First of heavy weight, perhaps attached to the light drachma of Marseilles with which the Cavares did a lot of trade, the coinage of classes 2 and 3 is rather modeled on the monetary system of the denier of the Rhone Valley.
