The treasure was discovered by chance on 19 November 1948 in Parabita, in the province of Lecce. Stored in the medal cabinet of the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto-MArTA, it consists of 184 Magna-Greek silver coins: 160 staters and 2 counterfeits from Taras, 3 staters from Heraclea Lucaniae (present-day Policoro, in Basilicata), 7 staters of Metapontum, 1 stater of Poseidonia, 2 staters from Thurium, 1 stater and 6 drachmas from Hyele/Elea, 2 staters from Croton.
The treasure was hitherto unpublished, apart from two brief notes by Attilio Stazio in the 1960scentury and a mention in the Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards (IGCH).
Its concealment fully documents those historical phases between the middle and the last years of the 3rd century BC, in which southern Apulia was the scene of the extreme defence of Taranto and the Messapi .
