IMITATION OF THE TRIENS OF LYON - FRISIA (?)

The Belfort lists all these coins in three groups in the "coins minted in Forez and Vivarais during the Sarrazine occupation". These trians were sometimes attributed to Leyden. These are barbaric reproductions of the coins of Lyons which do not at all resemble the coins of Dorestad (a mint near Leyden). In the 19th century, the Récamier collection "which brings together materials for a history of Lyon", possesses the most important series of these curious coins". These coins would probably have been minted between Lyon and Le Puy. Despite a wide variety of types, the classification is divided into three groups with common characteristics. Our example is similar in all respects to example n° 2343 of the Belfort, classified in the third group. Maurice Prou maintains an attribution to Friesland. However, more recently, in the catalog of the Musée de Lyon, J. Lafaurie specifies that "the places of discovery of these coins are located mainly in the Netherlands but also in Belgium and Germany.. They actually come from one or more workshops located in these regions under the domination of the Franks.. Their exact locations have yet to be determined.. They are generally of fairly low fine gold content and their manufacture is probably after 650 "cf. J. Lafaurie, Pages 39-40.
