François II (1768-1792) succeeded his father Léopold II who reigned very little (1790-1792). He is Duke of Milan and Mantua on his accession. He lost these regions in 1796-1797 during Bonaparte's first Italian campaign. The Treaty of Campo Formio in 1797 consecrates the role of France in this part of Italy.
