The Banque de France was created on January 18, 1800 as a partnership limited by shares, with merchants and bankers and with the support of Bonaparte. Its purpose was to restore confidence in the coin to promote economic recovery. It issues notes payable at sight and to bearer in return for the discount on commercial paper in Paris.
