Sur la fonte, le nom du lieutenant général inscrit est “Gribauval”. Cependant, les pièces d’artillerie portant son nom ainsi que les rues et plaques en son hommage s’écrivent toutes “Gribeauval”.
Le lieutenant général des armées et inspecteur général de l’artillerie Jean Baptiste Vaquette (ou Vacquette) de Gribeauval (1715-1789) est un ingénieur militaire connu pour ses nombreuses avancées techniques sur les fusils et surtout les canons, nommés “canons Gribeauval”, employés par l’armée française et lors de la Révolution.
Peu d’informations sont connues au sujet du graveur Fontaine. Il a probablement travaillé à la manufacture de la Charité sur Loire. Il fut également l’élève de Jean-Baptiste Nini (1717-1786), notamment connu pour ses médaillons en fonte retravaillés avant cuisson, à l’image de celui de Benjamin Franklin. .
