Историческая справка

TOURNAISIS - SIEGE OF TOURNAI

Tournai was invested on June 27, 1709 and its defense was entrusted to Louis-Charles de Hautefort, marquis de Surville, who had already participated in the defense of Lille with the Maréchal de Boufflers. The city did not capitulate until July 29, but Surville and his men retreated to the citadel, which did not surrender until September 3, 1709, after a 57-day siege. The coins of 20 sols or patards were made from the tableware of the Marquis and minted on July 13. Under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), Tournai was definitively attached to the Austrian Netherlands.
