François Tombalbaye, dit Ngarta Tombalbaye est un homme politique tchadien né le 15 juin 1918 à Bessada, près de Koumra, et assassiné lors d'un coup d’État le 13 avril 1975.
Fort-Lamy est le nom donné par les colons français à la ville actuelle et capitale du Tchad, Ndjamena. Fort-Lamy a été fondée par Émile Gentil le 29 mai 1900 sur l'emplacement d'un petit village kotoko, sur la rive droite du fleuve Chari et à proximité de la confluence du Chari et du Logone. Fort-Lamy fut baptisé en souvenir du commandant François Joseph Amédée Lamy, décédé à la bataille de Kousseri quelques jours plus tôt. La ville devient la 4e commune mixte d'Afrique équatoriale française en 1919. Le 6 novembre 1973, le président François Tombalbaye la renomme Ndjamena, du nom d'un village arabe voisin (Am Djamena, signifiant « le lieu où l'on se repose »).
